When I was little people always used to tell me that I didn’t need suncream because I am black but bbbooooyyyy where they completely wring, everyone needs suncream, melanin does not make you immune to sun damage and it has a lot of benefits which is why you should wear it EVERY SINGLE DAY not just in summer simply for the reason that “Ultraviolet rays that are the cause of sun damage and skin cancer are always present,” explains Dr. Shilesh Iyer, M.D., a Board Certified dermatologist with the renown New York Dermatology Group. “They are independent of cold or hot weather and are not blocked by clouds. On overcast days, only visible rays (but not UVB rays) from the sun are blocked. The best way to protect the skin is with sun protection.”
And yessss the SPF in your foundation, concealer, primer or powder is not enough. You might be thinking that your makeup containing SPF is a suitable substitute for sunscreen, it’s likely not protecting you from sun damage as well as you think.
What exactly is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor (Pretty obvious). It measures the level of protection a product will give you from UVB. The British Association of Dermatologists recommend always using a minimum of SPF 30, which blocks 97% of UVB. To put that into context, SPF 15 blocks 93% and SPF 50 blocks 98%. So, in reality, they should kinda stop selling anything below SPF15 because it is very misleading and as you can see not useless but not as effective as anything at SPF30 and above.
How much damage can UV rays really cause?
Sun damage shows itself in the form of dullness, uneven pigmentation and loss of firmness. Which is why SPF is perfect for preventing wrinkles for as long as possible, they kind of work as an anti-ageing product. “Ultraviolet rays from the sun are extremely harmful to the skin and cause more than 90 per cent of the visible signs of ageing including wrinkles, sagging, rough patches and skin discolouration,” confirms Dr Shirin Lakhani.
What’s the best way to apply your SPF?
“Your sunscreen should be applied after you moisturise and before you apply your foundation,” says Shirin. “Even if you are wearing makeup you still need to re-apply every two hours.” It also needs to be applied correctly to be effective, so make sure you’re using a decent amount. “Sunscreen should be applied before you leave home in the morning all year round,” adds Dr Qian Xu. “Even on cloudy winter days.”
