2022 had us dressing and feeling like it was 2000 all over again. We saw the reimagination of y2k trends, I’m talking ULTRA mini minis, super sheer fabrics, corsets, ‘90s neons, ’00s low-slung waists. The year of 2022 was light-hearted, nostalgic, and celebratory. It was exactly what we needed after two years of lockdown. This was truly my favorite season of fashion to date and you best believe I hopped on every single trend!
Mini skirts
This year we were introduced to the micro mini. These were the minis that the supermodels of the ’90s were proudly strutting in and a trend that I hope will stay with us going into 2023. As Kylie Jenner said “these are our years to be naked” so go show the world some leg!
CORSETS
My love of corsets is proving to be a powerful influence on the catwalk and beyond. Corsets have been a fashion favourite since 2019 and I honestly don’t see them going away anytime soon. So many designers built corseted waists into their silhouettes this year and with the comeback of Mulger, I think the corset will continue to evolve with the times! Let’s look at Balmain for example, they went that one step further this year by giving corset panels a futuristic edge, moulding them in metal to give the ultimate waist.
METALLICS
Metallics were the vibe for 2022 and I was HERE for it! Fashion was loud and somewhat reminiscent of times when life was all about having fun aka the disco era . This year the girls were really out here experimenting! We saw it all and trust me if you can pull off a pair of metallic trousers, you can pull of anything.
SHEER DRESSING
This one right here is a trend that I will be rocking till the day I die, there’s just something about sheer dressing. It screams sexy! You can layer it as an easy way to add visual and textural interest or you can rock it on its own but it will always make you feel like the boss lady that you are. I love the idea of a sheer top with a lace bra underneath or a sheer dress peeking out under a heavy blazer. It’s just such a vibe!
MAXI SKIRTS
Considering they were a staple part of ’90s fashion, it was only a matter of time before maxi skirts would appear on the runway. Until this year, I was never a fan, however, the mass media of the skirt completely changed my mind. Floor-sweeping skirts are taking over the industry and the best part is that even when temperatures start to drop you can still rock them.
BAGGY DENIM
Do you guys remember my blog post about the death of skinny jeans? Well, I guess I was right. I have not seen anyone rock a pair of skinny jeans in a minute!!!! Especially on the runway. I think it’s fair to say that everyone and their mom is all in on super-baggy jeans. They are the definition of an effortless look with the ultimate comfort – a relief in breezy and easy silhouettes. It’s giving Avril Levine skater-boy but make it 2022.
GOTH AESTHETIC
It back to black! For some the goth aesthetic is so much more than a trend; it’s a lifestyle. Gothic looks crop up on the runway every autumn/winter season, but there was just something different about this year – it came with an extra touch of femininity: the lace, the leather, the corset looks we saw people rocking this year, the goths girls won.
PLATFORMS
This year platforms have morphed into an ‘It girl’ essential! I remember when Tom Ford brought out his velvet disco platforms in 2020 and it was love at first sight for me. From the Valentino and Versace stompers that have been all over TikTok and Instagram, it’s more than fair that after two years of athleisure and sneakers that the world is ready to be adventurous with fashion again.
