Flares are taking over

Flares are taking over

As we are all aware trouser trends tend to stick around a little longer than others. Look at the skinny jean, which has been influencing the fashion scene for over a decade and a half now. However, all of that has now changed, as the autumn/winter 2019 runways were dominated by wide-legged silhouettes, particularly flares.

If there is one trend that I hope never dies out when it comes to trousers/ jeans, it’s this one. For the last, I would say 3 years people were speculation when this trend would come back into fashion and the moment has finally arrived – flares are taking over! I kid you not, making flares mainstream again was one of the best decisions the fashion industry ever made. Flares look good on ANYONE and EVERYONE. First of all, they make your ass look peachy af, second of all they make you look like you have supermodel legs and lastly with the correct top they give the illusion of an hourglass figure. What’s not to love about these? I think with the comeback of these as well as mom jeans still dominating, we can officially say that the skinny jean is officially DEAD! When was the last time you wore skinny jeans because personally I don’t remember?? Literally ever since I did my blog post on how the skinny jean is dead back in 2017 I have only bought one pair.

The key to rocking flares in this 2020 is to give them a modern twist: I am talking Self-tie silk blouses, button-up cardigans, dramatic sleeve shirts/ blouses, anything sheer, flatforms, and really good tailoring in order to keep the look contemporary, for example; split hems are the hype rn and offer a brand-new take on a classic leg shape.

Leather; trend of the year?

Leather; trend of the year?

I can’t lie to you guys, I honestly think that I’m psychic. I kid you not I started buying in on this trend in late 2018 when I still worked in Topshop, the leather pants in that store sold out within a week, I originally thought it would be a trend to dominate 2019 but it seems to be more popular this year! I am so obsessed I am with leather at the moment. Everything leather I need in my life; shirts, jackets, trousers and dresses (of course all faux leather before you all get on to me). Every-time I go out I literally have to restrain myself from buying another leather item.

Leather has been shown on the runway for two consecutive years at fashion month, last year for the fall 19 shows we saw designers add their own twist by presenting us with colourful leather as it was predicted that leather would replace our beloved faux coats/jackets and wow was that prediction was 100% correct! For me leather is known as a staple item, everyone from when they were a child has owned a leather biker jacket? Am I right or am I right? So in retrospect leather is nothing new to the fashion scene, I mean it was pretty prominent in the 80s/90s so in a way it makes sense that the next big trend during this nostalgic era of fashion would be leather. It’s only right, I mean we’ve been through denim, mom/dad jeans, shoulder bags, halter necks so of course you need at least one leather item to complete your 90s wardrobe. The only difference between leather now and how it was in the 80s/90s I’d say is the fact that a lot more people probably wear faux leather due to the growth in consciousness among the public on how clothes within the fashion industry are made and social media. Another difference is the fact that that era was dominated by leather trousers and long leather jackets, however, now we’re seeing leather mini skirts, leather dresses, cropped leather jackets and colourful leather etc. Additionally, we can now consider leather a more versatile fabric, which before was not the case; leather trousers were known to be too biker, leather dresses gave dominatrix vibes – leather was always associated with sexiness or toughness until now. 2019 and 2020 leather became FASHIONABLE in all forms!

If you don’t own anything leather, then I hate to break it to you but you’re doing life all wrong honey because leather is where it’s at this year! Here are some of my favourite leather items rn;

satin summer

satin summer

In case you didn’t get the memo, satin is no longer just something to wear in the bedroom, underwear is officially the new outerwear and has been for a while now, I mean look at how mainstream the lace bodysuit has become. Fashion is as free and expressive as it has ever been.

I think satin has been around since 2015/16 but I’m not 100% sure because it has only been super popular maybe for the last year and a half, max. By popular I mean it has been all over instagram, our favourite celebrities have been sporting it and of course, our high street stores like Topshop, PLT and River Island have been jumping onto the hype. I remember I bought my first satin top in 2015 (talk about being fashion forward), I bought a pyjama style top from misguided and to this day my mum takes the piss out of me every time I wear it, she literally says are you going to bed every time I wear it but I still love it!

Satin, is the fabric that is dominating 2019 and I am LIVING for it. What I love most about this fabric is how effortless it is, this is the one fabric that you can literally just dash on with a simple casual T-shirt underneath (if you’re wearing a satin top) and a nice pair of mom jeans and it would look like you made an effort when in reality you didn’t. You can either dress it up or dress it down, it is so versatile! It is also extremely comfortable and just overall amazing. From skirts to tops, shorts, dresses (my favourite) and how can I forget, pants however I’m talking wide leg because skinny satin/silk pants in the summer is not a good combo, especially if you sweat a lot like me, that fabric will be stuck to you like glue the entire time. And I am not joking, so please don’t try it, plus I highly doubt anyone could ever create a cute pair of skinny satin pants that I would see myself purchasing, to me that is not a vibe, it’s a fashion disaster.

Flowy midi skirts and midi dresses are not my style. If I wear a midi skirt or dress it has to be tight, that’s what works best for me and my body type and also my height, I’m 5’2 so it gives the illusion that I’m taller than I really am in photos. I think this is what has stopped me from buying satin dresses and skirts in the past because I didn’t think they’d look good on me but boy was I wrong! I purchased the cutest leopard satin slip dress from Topshop in January and I have been obsessed ever since. Everyone needs a satin slip dress in their lives, it fits perfectly in all of the right places, it makes your body look BOMB AF and it suits all body types. A little tip; if you can’t find anything nice in Satin try the underwear section of your favourite clothing store, never fails me.

I have loved seeing the way people have been styling satin on Instagram and Pinterest,  satin dress or skirt with a pair of Doc Martens and chunky trainers that is a vibe and so much more, here are my favourite satin piece ATM.

Dad Sneakers aka the ‘Ugly’ Sneaker trend

Dad Sneakers aka the ‘Ugly’ Sneaker trend

I have to admit that when Dad Sneakers first surfaced I HATED them with a passion, I just could not understand why anyone would ever think to design and then approve the production of such ugly trainers and think it was okay. Fashion is meant to be nice and these were ugly so I was confused af. Like literally, I thought all sorts of crimes of fashion were being committed and never did I ever think that I would wear them or be writing a blog post about how much I love them but here we are. Isn’t the world just full of surprises? I feel like they are the sort of thing that you have to see a million times, styled in a million different ways in order to learn to love them because for me the more I see something the more I learn to like it. There’s just something about ugly shoes that make you love them and I really wish I knew what it was because maybe It would help me come to my senses.

“I think these [luxury] houses took a long look in the mirror and realised that they were doing some things wrong and that culture was moving against them,” says Trunzo. “The tides were turning and they have to embrace what is going on, on a street level.”

This statement is so powerful in explaining how times are changing and how streetwear is taking over fashion and that if luxury brands aren’t up to date with this new generation they will eventually become irrelevant. This is why they are making these ‘ugly’ trainers – because they want to remain mainstream, trainers are no longer just sold by sports brands, anyone who is anyone sells sneakers in this era.

I personally think Dad Sneakers are fun, vibrant and so 90s. If you know me you know I am OBSESSED with 90s fashion! What is there not to love about the 90s? To me, it was the foundation of young peoples style and a turning point for fashion in so many ways, I could literally go on and on about it. The revival of this trend only goes to further prove my point that trends keep coming back better than ever and people are loving it, so forget the classic trainers, don’t be boring, go crazy with your style, be bold and get yourself a pair of ‘ugly’ trainers. Big soles, bright colours, bold logos and bulbous shapes are the only way to go this year when it comes to your sneaker choices!

Skirts Skirts Skirts and more skirts

If anyone knows me they now that I absolutely adore skirts! I wear them all day everyday! I may even have a slight obsession, who knows.

This may or may not be a phase but I never really used to like skirts, I was always a jean kind of girl for YEARS, even in primary school I refused to wear skirts/ dresses during summer, my mum would literally have to force me. However over time and after having gone through high school where I had no choice but to wear a skirt for 5 years straight I have grown to love them and in the last two years have built up quite a collection.

My friends and family already think I own too many skirts but in my opinion you can never own too much of anything. Every piece of clothing has a story to tell and an outfit to contribute to and an occasion to cater for. No one can ever have too many clothes!

Just because it’s winter it doesn’t mean that you can’t wear a skirt??? That’s why someone invented tights! And secondly I will wear whatever I want at my own risk, so just let me wear my skirt in peace. Sometimes you need to take a risk, no pain no gain right?

Festival Fever and major FOMO

Festival Fever and major FOMO

leeds-stage

Festival season is almost over and in all honesty I don’t know whether to be happy or sad. I mean i’m happy because it means that i won’t have to miss out on another festival this year and see everyone’s photos on social media of them having fun because i’m one of those people who gets extreme FOMO whether I know you or not! However I’m also sad because it means that they’ll be no more amazing outfit inspiration all over my Tumblr and Instagram and in addition to this, no more festivals mean no more summer and back to school :((  But next year after I finish high school I plan on having the best summer ever and the time of my life by traveling and going to as many festivals and places as possible in the space of 3 months.

I’m literally so upset because I missed out on a chance to go to Leeds fest this Friday which if I haven’t mentioned already I am  extremely sad about because whilst my friends are out having fun i’ll be stuck at home watching Netflix. Talk about an eventful Friday night right? I thought that I might as well turn my disappointment into a blog post and give you guys an idea of what I would wear if I was going to Leeds fest for the full weekend accessories included!
