Brands for WOC made by WOC

Last week in my post about how the beauty industry is still failing us I basically described how we live in a world where being “diverse” and “inclusive” has become a marketing tactic to benefit brands with more profits yet we still only make up 10% or less of the shelves but contribute billions of dollars every year to this industry. Make that make sense, please. Though inclusivity is slowly growing in the industry and it’s amazing to see but it still isn’t enough, there just isn’t enough choice.

So what better way to celebrate Black History Month than by checking out some amazing black-owned beauty brands made for black women, with these brands we’re not an afterthought, we are the brand. Some of these brands are simply making a point to include products of all shades, while others are solving skin and makeup woes specific to women of colour in innovative and exciting ways. It’s time to support a broader, more beautiful beauty industry. These black-owned beauty brands aren’t asking for a seat at the table, they’re making one.

Here are some black-owned beauty brands to buy from;

Brush and bake. Our Loose Powder is excellent for baking…your face. For a “photoshopped” look without the photoshop, apply foundation and concealer then press and roll a very liberal layer of powder on areas of your face you want to look brighter (under eyes; along the top of jawbone; down the center of nose). Let the powder “bake” for 5-10 minutes; and then lightly brush away the excess. You’ll look chiseled all day!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fashionfaircosmetics #melaninpoppin #blackgirlmagic #fresh #blackgirlsrockit #melanin #blackownedbusiness #femaleowned #buyblack #buyblackowned #blackentrepreneur #grownsexysmart #bakeyourface #notphotoshopped #brightandbeautiful

a mother’s love knows no bounds✨ hey beauties, we’re kicking off our love series with our faves @teniola_o + her son Jude! get a quick glimpse of their bond with our series of questions: What has motherhood taught you about love? Motherhood has taught me how complicated love actually is. It’s taught me the difference between “like”, “love”, and even “hate”. It means something different to everyone and we can express our love in so many different ways. The way that it’s represented in music and movies is one thing, but we should all have more discussions about love, rather than assume that we all mean the same thing when we say “I love you” What is your favorite thing to do together? Jude is the king of relaxing. We love to hang out at home and watch a movie, read a book, make dinner or just listen to music. We love to be out in the summer months, too. We’ll meet up with our friends and head to the Farmer’s Market or to the park for fresh air and sunshine. What is your favorite thing about your mom? Aside from being supportive in all that I do, I love my Mom’s style and attention to detail. She has a fabrics business that is pretty successful and she is constantly keeping up with trends and modeling styles. It isn’t uncommon for her to send me a text with dress styles, or a bag that she sees online and say “I’m getting this for you”. She’s so loving for her to make sure that I look and feel great. How is shea used in your home? I love multi-use products so shea is a favorite in our house. We use shea when we get out of the shower, in the morning before school and work, to moisturize around cuts and scars and in our hair. We regularly smell like the Vanilla Lavender Whipped Shea scent because we use it each and everyday!
