2020’s Fashion Trends of the Year

2020’s Fashion Trends of the Year

I don’t think anything can compare or will ever compare to 2020, it has been a year that I will never forget, that’s for sure, it’s been a whirlwind, to say the least, and I am so happy it’s finally over. It’s so weird but in my head, I honestly thought that on the 1st of January (which is today) that COVID would magically disappear and that I would be able to go back to enjoying my prime years but unfortunately, that is not the case.

Almost nothing about 2020 was at all expected. It was the year of surprises and I think one of the biggest lessons I learnt this past year was to just enjoy life and live in the moment because tomorrow really isn’t promised, 2020 taught us that the hard way – life can be taken away from us at any moment so why should we sweat over the small things? This year we all survived and I am forever grateful but in the year 2021, I want us all to actually LIVE life, stop waiting for the right moment and just go for it!

This was the fastest yet shortest year of my life, and while a majority of us might not have dressed up as much as we thought that we would have or got a chance to wear or holiday outfits for obvious reasons there were still some very great trends that came out of this year and ones that we can probably wear into 2021! The fashion trends from the past 12 months felt normal or predictable, loungewear became not just acceptable but fashionable as it has been over the last 3 years, and multiple ‘90s styles made their triumphant return to our closets as they have been for the last 5 years but this year these trends really made their mark, hence why I said that they were predictable and felt normal and I envision that over the next 5 years we’ll see the rise of 2000s fashion. No one can even argue with me on this one because every trend in this list I have been rocking since 2018, I am ahead of my time when it comes to fashion hence why I still blog. Here are my top trends of 2020;

Maxi Faux Leather Coats

The Long Leather Coat Is This Season's Must-Have Trend | Teen Vogue

Grunge was the new normal this year and maxi leather jackets were leading the wave – high fashion or funky with a grunge twist, these long-line pieces are perfect all year round, after all, we do live in the UK. This is another ’90s staple that just got a fresh upgrade!

Printed tights

Chanel Logo Tights Are Here And We're Obsessed | Who What Wear UK

I have a love-hate relationship with tights, I wore them for 5 years straight during high school so for me I can appreciate the printed tights trend, however, I don’t tink you’ll ever see me rocking them, they’re cute but they’re not for me

Square-Toed Heels

Square Toe Shoes Are One of Fall's Biggest Trends

We call it the Bottega Effect, Bottega’s influence in terms of trends is astonishes me every single season – after so many seasons of pointed-toe shoes reigning supreme, the square toe is making a triumphant comeback thanks to Bottega Veneta!

Oversized Gold Chain Necklaces

Chunky Gold Necklaces Are Fall's Biggest Jewelry Trend | Who What Wear

If you’re looking for just one jewellery trend to magically make your outfit no matter how simple it is – it is a chunky necklace. It is an accessory that has risen above the rest thanks to our Scandinavian fashionistas.

Chunky Boots

Stomping ground: Why it's time to invest in the chunky boot trend | The Independent

My favourite trend of 2020 and one that I will rock until the day I die, Chunky boots are just that BITCH in terms of fashion. If you ask me they are a staple piece, they go with anything and almost everything!

TIE DYE

The Tie-Dye Trend Looks Really Different in 2020 | Shopbop | POPSUGAR Fashion

A trend I’ve hated from the get-go, to me it’s just so tacky and I just don’t understand the hype, I really hope we leave this 60’s throwback in 2020

SWEATSUITS

How I Learned That Giving in to Sweats Doesn't Mean Giving Up - Fashionista

I have literally been posting about tracksuits and athleisure wear every year since i started this series but this year, it really hit its peak during quarantine. SO many of us got so used to being comfortable that we completely forgot that jeans and other forms of bottoms existed!

BIKE SHORTS

Bike Shorts Trend - Bike Shorts are the Comfiest Trend You Didn't Know You Needed

I’m so over biker shorts, they’re just unflattering and belong in the gym and the gym only or as loungewear

Fringe

Autumn/Winter 2020 Runway Fashion Trends

Although this trend didn’t pop as expected this year, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing everyone this summer rocking fringe. Mark my words, hop onto this trend before the rest of the world!

Harnesses

Strap In—The Harness Is Officially Happening This Fall | Vogue

My problem with harnesses is that my generation don’t appreciate them as much as I do and just think that they can pair it with every outfit they wear so even though i still love them, I also hate them. It all depends on how it’s worn

What I would buy if I won the lottery; sushi master class

So……. I have a confession to make. Surprisingly enough, I have never tried sushi. I know, I’m shocked too, it’s one of those things that I’ve always wanted to try but just never built up the guts to do – I just don’t understand how people can say that raw fish is THAT good. I’m African so everything we eat has to be cooked and when I say cooked I mean well done. I think if I took my mom to a sushi restaurant she’d actually kill me because this woman hates prawns, so I don’t even want to try feeding her sushi before she accuses me of trying to poison her lol. African mums are so dramatic. However, I couldn’t really think of a better opportunity to try sushi than to actually go behind the scenes and make it myself, that way I actually know what’s going into what I’m eating and then if I ever crave it I can make it at home. it’s a win-win situation really.

My choice of sushi making is none other than the infamous Nobu, loved by literally every celebrity and their mom, Nobu London remains the most celebrated global sushi brand, as well as a destination restaurant for exquisite Japanese dining. With this experience, you get to learn from the best of the best Nobu sushi chefs and discover the secrets to perfecting the art of making sushi making. Take part in a public sushi masterclass at Nobu here!

What is included;
  • Two tickets to join an interactive group sushi masterclass with the experts at Nobu London
  • A 150ml bamboo vessel of Onikoroshi Sake each
  • Lunch will include a selection of signature dishes, as well as the sushi made in the class
  • Take home a Nobu Sushi Kit each to practice your new-found skills
  • Service charge on the listed food and beverages is already included in the cost of this experience

Printed mesh is the vibe

Printed mesh is the vibe

Apparently, this whole mesh has been around for the last 7 years – since 2013. Either I haven’t been paying attention or I’m not the fashion connoisseur I thought I was. Personally, for me, I saw mesh become mainstream in 2015 after I discovered Coachella and it was always based around the idea of festival fashion but you never really saw people wear it as a ‘normal’ fashion piece until maybe late 2017 when underwear became the new outerwear. And now I think mesh has hit its peak within mainstream fashion and I am LIVING for it. I don’t what it is but mesh and I are spiritually bonded to one another, everything mesh that I see I instantly need it in my life!

Last year on the runway we saw A LOT of mesh, this material is a great transitional piece for summer to autumn to winter because you can layer it! There are so many ways to wear this trend – those bold enough can even go completely braless and rock mesh in all of its glory but odds are most women who aren’t  Rihanna wouldn’t dream of leaving the house in a full mesh or sheer top with her breasts totally exposed, especially in the U.K because the people here are super bad vibes sometimes lol. But I promise you, one day I’m gonna rock mesh the way its meant to be worn, like a true 90s supermodel, it’ll be a true moment!

Like I say all the time Fashion trends are cyclical, they’re always coming in and out of fashion and I’m sure that you can all guess that this trend is in fact from the 90s – slightly transparent, lightweight and majorly sexy, it’s a look that is largely associated with the iconic fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, whose slinky, tattooed meshes first sauntered down the runway back in the early ’90s.

There are also many ways of wearing it and you can shop some of my fave mesh pieces here;

What I would buy if I won the lottery; Global dining domination

What I would buy if I won the lottery; Global dining domination

I hope all my friends and family are paying close attention to all of these “what I would buy if I won the lottery” blog posts because this is basically a wishlist for me at this point – everything I write about every single Friday I would really appreciate as gifts.  This one, I think is my favourite experience yet, imagine being able to combine the love of fine dining as well as the love of travelling all in one on a vacation! Food as everyone knows it is a universal language, the cure to everything in life, well my life anyway. When I’m happy, I eat. When I’m sad, I eat. When I’m celebrating, I eat. No matter what mood I am in I am always in the mood for food, especially if I’m travelling. Eating local foods is one of the best ways to submerse yourself in another culture, especially if you try traditional foods as you can also educate yourself on the dishes and why they eat them – for example in most restaurants in zimbabwe they serve sadza/ pap and that is our staple food.  Therefore we can all establish that food in a sense is an expression of cultural identity. So imagine how incredible a journey around the globe for the best food the world has to offer; with stops at six of the ‘World’s 50 Best Restaurants.’ Traverse six continents, dining at the best restaurant on each, and encounter the true diversity of global fine dining would be. A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE.

The restaurants;

El Celler de Can Roca | Elite Traveler : Elite Traveler

4th – Central

Meet Chef Virgilio Martinez of Central, Peru's Best Restaurant

Yes, Attica Is Worth It: What Makes Ben Shewry's Restaurant ...

48th – The Test Kitchen

The Test Kitchen |The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2019 | Ranked No. 44

50th – The French Laundry

The French Laundry | Thomas Keller Restaurant Group

You would spend 4 days in each city, with a personalised itinerary from your TRULY Concierge. In Cape Town, discover theatrical Nouvelle-Latin cuisine at The Test Kitchen. Your next stop will be an exploration of Peruvian culture at Central in the magnificent city of Lima. From here you will savour refined French fare in California’s Wine Country at Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry in San Francisco. Dive into the bounty of the nature of Japan at Tokyo’s Narisawa. Finally, polish off a whirlwind experience feasting on native Australian fare at perhaps the world’s most extravagant dining experience, Melbourne’s Attica.

From London to Girona, Cape Town, Lima, San Francisco, Tokyo and Melbourne. This is what you call an EXPERIENCE.

Most expensive holiday destinations; Oslo

Most expensive holiday destinations; Oslo

Oslo, the capital of Norway, known for its green spaces and museums according to my research, Oslo is the number one most expensive country to travel to – tourist industries that charge about 20% more than anywhere else in Western Europe and a whopping 70% higher than world averages. Norway is notoriously known as Scandinavia’s—and Northern Europe’s—most expensive country. Originally I thought Switzerland was expensive but compared to Norway, it’s nothing! I always used to see these rows of colourful houses but I never actually knew where it was until today – Oslo is a scenic city filled with Scandinavian charm and hints of the Norwegians’ Viking history. Oslo tends to be clean and safe, and most of the population speaks almost fluent English, which can make it easy for you to get around.

Cropped jackets you need to cop

Cropped jackets you need to cop

Cropped jackets have been around since winter of 2017 and I don’t think they’re going anytime soon, they’re the perfect layering item and my favourite type of jacket to wear. For one, they keep you somewhat warm but at the same time you can still show off your outfit! A cropped jacket is the perfect outerwear piece to have during the summer, in all honesty, it should be one of your wardrobe staples.

The evolution of the cropped jackets over the last 3 years is one of my favourites – we’ve seen it go from being just cropped denim jackets to now cropped blazers (which I am LIVING FOR), cropped tweed jackets and cropped leather too! The item has been given a much-needed touch of elegance and we really love to see it.

Shortened to hit right at the waistline, this cut is seriously flattering too and here are my faves atm;

Most expensive holiday destinations; Seychelles

Some people want to go to the Maldives but I have always wanted to go to the Seychelles. I feel like most people don’t actually know or have ever of this beautiful archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean, off East Africa. This is literally one of Africa’s many hidden treasures. The Seychelles is a nation of 115 islands scattered over 400,000sq km surrounded by crystal clear blue waters. The islands were once known as a five-star destination with three-star hotels but fast forward to now and that’s far from the truth, new-look Seychelles offers areas of outstanding man-made beauty and the best of luxury!

Because each island in the Seychelles is very different, many visitors choose a two or three-stop holiday.

THINGS TO DO IN SEYCHELLES

BIRD ISLAND

Bird Island Lodge Seychelles, Seychelles - Booking.com
Bird Island is situated about 60 miles from the main island of Mahe, and is easily reached by plane. Its 170 acres are covered in corals and lined with the purest white sand.

COUSINE ISLAND

Villa Cousine Island Seychelles, Seychelles - Booking.com

A speck about 6km off the west coast of Praslin, Cousine Island is owned by a South African businessman, who has embarked on an intensive conservation programme to restore it to its primal state. About 2,000 indigenous trees have been planted, and 12 endangered magpie robins have been introduced to share the island with a couple of thousand nesting birds (fairy terns, sooty terns, shearwaters, Seychelles brush warblers, Fodies) and four giant tortoises (each of which, apparently, command around the same market value as a giraffe). Much of the rocky island is out of bounds to visitors.

FREGATE ISLAND

Resort Fregate Island Private, Seychelles - Booking.com

There are wonderful walks to be had on Frégate – through primeval jungle, up enormous granite outcrops and along white-sand beaches. Away from the resort, the rest of the island is given over to conservation projects (protecting the endangered magpie robin population, among others), cultivation (vegetables produced with a very sophisticated hydroponics system), livestock (pigs, cows, chickens) and recreation (water sports and scuba-diving; fishing boats, yachts, catamarans and motorboats).

LA DIGUE ISLAND

La Digue Island Lodge, La Digue – Updated 2020 Prices

The island’s stunning beaches of silky white sand are lapped by turquoise seas. The best beach, Anse Source D’Argent, is reachable by bicycle. Other good places to swim are Petite Anse, with its large smooth boulders. La Digue’s west coast, south of La Passe, is protected by a reef, creating calm water, ideal for snorkelling. Besides the pleasures of beach life, La Digue offers horse riding, diving, fishing and boat trips. The bird sanctuary is a woodland of takamaka and badamie (Indian almond) trees, home to several nesting pairs of the rare, endemic black paradise flycatcher. Horse riding is available at L’Union Estate and diving instruction, expeditions and boat trips to tiny Félicité Island (population 12) can be arranged at La Digue Island Lodge.

MAHE ISLAND

Mahe, Seychelles, travel tips - Seychellesbookings.com

Mahé is the largest island, and home to 65,000 people. It has the highest mountain ranges in the Seychelles and the world’s smallest capital, Victoria. For a stylish souvenir, Michael Adams, Seychelles’ most famous artist, has a studio/gallery at his home at Anse aux Poules Bleues (00 248 361 006; michaeladamsart.com).

PRASLIN ISLAND

A Guide to Praslin Island in the Seychelles • The Blonde Abroad

The archipelago’s second-largest island is a 15-minute plane hop from Mahé. It is most famous for the Vallée de Mai (open 8am-5.30pm), a World Heritage Site home to the distinctive coco de mer palm. It is a fascinating, friendly and unspoilt island to explore by foot, bicycle or hire-car. A number of excursions, including cruises, bird-watching and photographic expeditions are available from both Mahé and Praslin.

Where to stay;

North Island, a Luxury Collection Resort

Set on the private North Island in the Seychelles, this exclusive hotel offers 11 villas  along the islands beautiful beaches. The Spa on North Island boasts the use of natural herbal ingredients found on the island, while the various dining options allow you to enjoy the island’s harvest. Villas start from €7,046 (£6,195). All-inclusive. Free Wi-Fi. Children under 17 stay free, however, those between the ages of 17 and 19 years old are charged at €773 (£680) per night.

In addition to the 30-minute complimentary welcome treatment at the spa, guests of North Island benefit from various activities and services included with their stay. These include scuba diving courses and activities, snorkelling in and around North Island, sunset cruises, guided walks and the use of stand-up paddleboards, sea kayaks and bicycles. Guests can join in on the group morning yoga class and set out on a shore-based or half-day fishing trip. The use of one island buggy is available per villa.

Tell me that doesn’t sound like the dreamiest of holidays.

What I would buy if I won the lottery; sky diving in Dubai

What I would buy if I won the lottery; sky diving in Dubai

Sky diving has been on my bucket list from the age of 13. It’s been a whole 6 years and I still haven’t been skydiving so in the spirit of my love for luxury and my love for travel, I thought to myself, If I am going to go sky diving – why the hell would I ever do it in the U.K. when I can do it in Dubai??? Everyone around me thinks I’m completely insane for wanting to do so but I am such a carpe diem kind of person. I am such a cliche in the respect that you only get one life so I am going to live it doing silly shit like this. Think about it this way, if I die (GOD FORBID), at least I died having fun. Am I right or am I right?

This sounds so weird but does anyone else feel like adrenaline is good for them? I feel like in order for me to keep motivated and to keep my life going I need a bit of adrenaline every once in a while. For me adrenaline is like working out, initially, it might not actually want to do it bit, in the end, I feel so much better. You’re probably all thinking why Dubai of all places, that’s so random! And yes, it’s so random because the scenery isn’t even all of that compared to other countries I could do it in, however, I’m thinking about all the adrenaline I’ll have after to go and splurge at Dubai mall and give myself the most perfect, rarest, one of a kind well-done gift from me to me – preferably a designer bag. However I’m not completely materialistic, another reason I would choose Dubai specifically is because Skydive Dubai has an excellent reputation for safety and expertise, and is one of the leading skydiving companies in the world. They also hold several Guiness World Records and have developed 2 amazing skydiving locations in Dubai. Therefore I know for a fact I’m coming back in one piece.

dubai skydiving

Here are a few things that may help you out, if you ever want to try it too;

Rules & Restrictions
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Please carry your valid photo id proofs Emirates ID, driver’s license, an ID card with photo, passport.
  • Weight and BMI (Body Mass Index) with clothing and sports shoes must not exceed the maximum safety requirements.
  • BMI and weight requirements are as follows:
    • Women – 90 kgs (198 lbs) or less. Maximum BMI of 27.5.
    • Men – 100 kgs (220.5 lbs) or less. Maximum BMI 30.

Tips For Your First Time Skydiving Experience
  • Eat a moderate and healthy breakfast before you head out for your experience. Just know that skydiving with an empty or full stomach is not fun. Just keep it light and make sure you’re nourished well before your dive.
  • Get a good sleep the night before. Though it is normal for the excitement of the jump to keep you up all night, try and ensure that do you manage to get some good hours of sleep.
  • Wear the right clothes – athletic and comfortable clothes, sneakers/sport shoes. Sandals, high heels and shirts with collars won’t be allowed.
  • Be prepared to wait. Skydiving is an extremely weather dependant sport. The SkyDive Dubai officials keep a constant check on the weather monitor to keep track of the winds. If the wind picks up or the weather deteriorates, be prepared to wait. If the conditions are not suitable, your experience may take a little longer.
  • If you’re a female and would want a female tandem instructor, then kindly request the same at the campus.
  • Relax, breathe, jump and enjoy! Statistically, skydiving is safer than being on the road according to the United States Parachuting Association.
When is the best time to skydive in Dubai?

Summer in the desert can be hot, so to avoid the heat, the best time for skydiving is during the winter, from October to April.

Most expensive holiday destinations; Musha Cay

Most expensive holiday destinations; Musha Cay

I have been trying to think of a new travel series for you guys for so long now and then it just clicked – I haven’t done anything to do with luxury travel in what feels like YEARS so I thought that over the next 10 weeks or so I would provide you with the most expensive travel destinations the world has to offer. By now you should all know that I am a dreamer so this is series should not be a surprise to anyone. I think it’d be so cool for me to look back at series like this in 10 years time and do updates on the places that I used to blog about once I actually go there, so in a way, I am sort of manifesting it by writing about it. If that makes sense!

So our first stop on this series is Musha Cay. Until now I had literally never heard of this place and then I found out that it’s actually a privately island in the Exuma chain in the southern Bahamas owned by illusionist David Copperfield. The island made it in the most expensive destinations, for this reason, rates start at $42,000 a day for up to 12 persons with a 5-night minimum. Imagine staying an entire week you have spent $294,000 and then 10 days you’d spend $420,00. Do you know how insane that is???? One vacation. That money can buy you a good size 5 bedroom family home somewhere in Yorkshire! Within that price, you get all meals and beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, including fine wines and champagnes) and unlimited use of all island amenities including a state-of-the-art gym, tennis court, volleyball, swimming pool, and billiards. A night at Dave’s Drive-in is also included, HOWEVER transportation to and from Musha Cay, international telephone calls, massage, deep-sea fishing, special entertainment such as fireworks, musical groups, and a custom treasure hunt are not included.
