I may only be 17 but I cannot wait for the day that I get married! I have always dreamed of having the perfect wedding; so much that I plan on having 2 and wearing 6 dresses. I know it sounds ridiculous but being the fashionista I am I need a dress for each stage of my wedding; one for the ceremony, reception and after party. Secondly the reason for me wanting 2 weddings is because I want all of my loved ones to see me get married meaning that I need to have a wedding here in the UK and one in Africa, that way everyone I love gets to share the happiest day of my life with me and I get to do it twice! I envision it to be one of the happiest moments of my life and a part of my life that I will cherish for a lifetime.
The most important thing for me and all most every woman out there who dreams of getting married has to be the dress- we all want the perfect dress or in my case dresses. And for some of us money will not be an object when it comes to purchasing that dress. Although it’s not quiet the same process, what I found last year when trying on prom dresses is that our minds can change on what we perceive to be our ‘dream’ dress and that at times we end up picking a design that had never even crossed our minds. I guess what I’m trying to say is that visit as many stores as you possibly can, try on every style you can to get as much variation as possible – don’t just go on pictures because your ideal dress may not be what you expected. I remember last year before even visiting the first prom dress shop, I had already picked out my dress but when I got there it wasn’t the perfect fit I had pictured in my head, so DO NOT rule anything out – every dress is a possible candidate, but more importantly don’t stress, have fun with it and in time you’ll find the right dress for you!
If you really want to make your special day even more special I would recommend getting your dress custom made that way you know that no one else will have worn the same dress as you making your wedding day that little bit more unique! But if you don’t know where you would even start with the design process or you’re just simply a lazy bride here are some of my favourite couture gowns from my top 10 favourite bridal designers to help you in your search for your dream dress;
Last week was the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards and this year wasn’t you’re average Golden Globes but it was a movement, Women and men wore black in support of the Me Too movement and Time’s Up initiative to fight sexual misconduct and gender inequality in the workplace.
As a young woman growing up in today’s world I find it hard to believe that there is still gender inequality within the workplace, it’s 2018 for goodness sake. No one is born more superior than the other, we are all equal, yet society teaches us that there is a hierarchy and men are at the top of this. Women have always had to fight for their rights, we had to fight for our right to vote and until recently women were only seen to be homemakers, we had to prove ourselves and we have to work a hundred times harder than men in order to gain high ranking roles yet when we do obtain those roles we’re still paid less. Why do men get paid more to do the same job? Why are women disregard for promotions? Why is this still occurring? Who decided this? What more needs to be done for there to be gender equality within the workplace?
As well as fighting for gender equality the night was also dedicated to fighting against sexual misconduct in the work place. Receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, handed to her by Reese Witherspoon, one of the leaders of Time’s Up Oprah delivered an empowering and emotional speech.“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up. Their time is up.”
A lot of women are scared to speak out against sexual harassment within the workplace over fear that they may not be believed or that they may lose their jobs. A good example of this is Harvey Weinstein, a well known director in Hollywood who took advantage of his position and convinced women into committing sexual acts with him by telling them they would potentially lose their jobs and last year more than 50 women made allegations against him and the numbers are still growing. This needs to change and it needs to change now! Why does sexual harassment even occur especially in the workplace, women are not objects and they should be able to do their jobs in peace.
On the bright side black looks good on EVERYONE and the Golden Globes is evidence of this, people did not come to paly this year! here are my favourite looks;
Couture week ended just over a week ago and it still forever remains my favourite version of fashion week! Nothing will ever beat couture week for me, it is the most extravagant and elaborate week of fashion.Although the average person may never be able to afford couture or even know how and where to wear it, it’s always nice to look at and fantasise about. Right?
Of course Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner ruled the couture week runway this year, the models of the moment, they are the Cindy Crawford’s of this generation and will be remembered for generations as the models of the 2010s and the social media queens of our generation.
We never know what to expect when it comes to haute couture because it is nothing like your average fashion week! Some designers like to keep it simple and classic whilst others like to think outside of the box and go all out for the most luxurious week in fashion.
ChanelMy favourite show by far was Chanel, Karl Largafeld is the king of the fashion industry and is so incredibly creative in the way that he expresses his ideas through fashion, he is able to still keep the classic Chanel look but then adds a twist in order to fit the trends of the season, which is amazing. And his muse and inspiration Lily Depp looked lost her haute couture virginity as she closed the show alongside the man himself. In my opinion the day Mr Largafeld steps down will be a very sad day for fashion. I don’t think anyone will ever be able to live up to him, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
ValentinoAnother favourite of mine was the Valentino show. The clothes were so made for the year of 2017; they were almost heavenly in a way with the pallets of colours used and the way that the pieces flowed across the runway. The hints of bold colours involved in the show definitely stood out and made such a bold first impression!
Elie SaabIn addition to this, the Elie Saab show was breathtaking, the Ellie Saab show gets better and better every year! I loved every single piece in the collection, every attention detail was done to absolute perfection! And I think if we learnt anything from Elie Saab it is that naked dresses are here to stay and are surely not going out of style any time soon.
Zuhair MuradThis year we saw a lot of bold colours presented on the zuhair murad runway and the reveal of the huge wedding dress just made the show for me, it was so unexpected yet expected at the same time. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the entire show, I was completely Mesmerised.
Jean Paul GaultierThe jean Paul Gaultier show was nothing if not extremely tailored for the modern day woman. The bold patterns and colours made such a huge statement on the runway and I love jean Paul for doing this, I truly feel like he captured the idea of what it means to be a woman in a society like today’s through his clothes.
